How to use your grow kit

Slice

Pull out the perforated square, cut a shallow X across one whole face of the bag.

Spray

Keep the humidity high by lightly misting the cut area thrice daily, from about 1/2m away.

Harvest the bouquet

Twist the ripe bouquet from the block, cut excess substrate from the stem and eat asap, or keep in the fridge for up to a week.

FAQs

What are thoooose?!

Our mushroom grow kits are a simulated version of a beautiful, decomposing log in the forest, made of hydrated sawdusted and soybean hulls (both waste products of other industries!).

They’ve been fully colonised by your chosen species of mycelium and are now bursting at the seams, eager to fruit, i.e. give you mushrooms.

Are we there yet?

With the right conditions, it will take about two weeks before harvest. If after twenty-one days there’s no sign of growth, shoot us a message and photo on instagram and we’ll sort you out.

What do they yield?

Treated with kindness, our kits will produce about half a kilo of mushrooms in the first flush with diminishing returns on flushes thereafter.

Moley, Moley, Mouldy?

Isolated portions of black or green mould aren’t disastrous and won’t prohibit mushroom development. Just ensure the harvested mushrooms are free from contamination. Alternatively, if the mould covers a significant portion of the cut area, tape up the opening and start again from the clean face.

Anything else?

Shoot us an instagram DM @rufflefarm if you have any other questions :)

Can I save it for my mate?

Unopened kits can be stored in the fridge for up to two months, though for best results open asap. Pink Oysters however despise the cold and should be opened immediately.

But where to put you?

Once opened, our kits need high humidity and indirect sunlight. Bathrooms with a bit of air movement are ideal. Kitchen benches work well.

When to harvest?

Oyster mushrooms should be harvested when the lip of the largest cap begins to uncurl, and before the lip flattens or ruffles. Harvest Lion’s Mane when the little spines are about three millimetres long, fluffy but not yet shaggy.

Wait, there’s more?

Yup*, if the humidity is kept high by misting as usual, these biscuits might fruit again. For best results, tape up the old slice, spin the bag around and start anew on the clean face. Optionally, you can soak the bag in water overnight to boost the hydration for a second round.

*depending on the variety of mushroom.

Disposal?

Spent substrate (used block) is green waste. It can be broken down and added to your compost or directed to your garden bed as mulch. The plastic bag goes in your household rubbish.

Happy Growing!
